Tuscany Chianti Classico Black Rooster

In Tuscany the Black Rooster is the symbol of Chianti Classico wine. Not all the wine produced in the Chianti zone is Chianti Classico.
To have the right to a denomination is not sufficient.In fact, the provenance refers to a given territory but also all the rules stipulated in the production regulations must be respected.
Those rules determine the conditions and the requisites that permit a wine to be decked out with the name Chianti Classico DOCG.
Chianti Classico wine in addition, other fundamentals and other requisites concern the ampelographical base—or the types of grapes that can be used in the preparation of the wine.
The rules provide for a minimum ratio of 80% for Sangiovese, the typical red variety of the zone. Along with the Sangiovese, other red grapes of the area can be used in a maximum percentage of 20%. These grapes include natives like Canaiolo and Colorino as well as “international” varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all recommended and/or authorized for the production zone.
Among the principal sensory characteristics indicated by the production rules, there is the ruby red color that can become at times intense and profound, depending upon the wine’s origin.
The odor offers floral notes of violets and irises combined with a typical character of red fruit. The flavor is harmonious, dry and sapid with a good level of tannin that fines in time, becoming soft and velvety. Other requisites requested include a minimum alcohol level of 12 degrees for young wines and 12.5 degrees for the Riserva.

Florence Uffizi Gallery: The Gleam of Gold

Uffizi Gallery - The International Gothic Style in Florence. 1375-1440

This year, till November 4th 2012, the rooms on the main floor of the Galleria degli Uffizi will host an important exhibition that intends to reconstruct the panorama of Florentine art in the wonderful and crucial period that extended roughly from 1375 to 1440.
In order to render the cultured and precious climate of this long season, this show will present paintings that have been famous for centuries, alongside other exquisite paintings little known to the general public, along with sculpture in wood and marble, illuminated codices, works of sacred and profane art:  all of them creations of superlative value and undisputed historical importance which come from prestigious public museum institutions, as well as from Italian and foreign private collections.
The exhibition itinerary will follow a chronological order and begin from works by the greatest interpreters of the final phase of the fourteenth-century tradition.  These artists include Agnolo Gaddi, Spinello Aretino, Antonio Veneziano, Gherardo Starnina and Lorenzo Monaco.  Following the death of Starnina, Monaco was left the greatest Florentine painter to propose his own very personal version of the late gothic style.  One that was extraneous even to the refined naturalism of Gentile da Fabriano, whose work in those years was steeped in lyricism, and who also features in the exhibition with paintings that are famous for their moving beauty.

Rome - On the Silk Road

On the Silk Road. Ancient Pathways Between East and West

From 27 October 2012 - 24 March 2013

Rome    Palazzo delle Esposizioni

The exhibition retraces the long journey between east and west from the 7th to the 14th centuries AD, illustrating the numerous different cultures along the Silk Road route with reconstructions of four iconic cities:

Chang'an, today's Xi'an, the cosmopolitan capital of the Chinese Tang Dynasty;
Turfan, an oasis city in the Gobi Desert;
Samarkand, a major centre of trade and culture,
Baghdad, capital of the Muslim world and seat of the Caliphate.

A unique section produced exclusively for the Italian exhibition and curated by Luca Molà, Alexandra Wetzel and Ludovica Rosati, explores the relationship between certain Italian cities, particularly Venice and Genoa, and the Far East in the final few centuries of the Middle Ages.

For while Marco Polo is unquestionably the best-known traveller, we should remember that he was not the only man to go seeking his fortune in China at the time of the Mongol domination: documentary sources testify with absolute certainty to the presence of a sizeable group of Italian merchants in the China of the day.
